Evaluation of Bandwidth Assurance Service Using Red for Internet Service Diierentiation

چکیده
In best-eeort Internet, Random Early Detection (RED))11] active queue management is accepted as a signiicant improvement over traditional Drop Tail queueing in preventing congestion and reducing other pathological conditions. With initial eeorts for Diierentiated Services In-ternet beginning, RED is naturally regarded as one of the building block mechanisms on which various services can be built. In this paper, we investigate RED's capability to render end-to-end rate guarantee to subscribers , as proposed in 6]. Earlier simulation results for an ideal but unrealistic settingg5] show that RED in combination with edge traac conditioning can be used to provide end-to-end bandwidth guarantee. This paper further explores the idea under diicult and more realistic conditions using extensive simulation. In particular, we report three important ndings. First, TCP throughput assured by the service framework is almost immune to the eeect of round-trip time variation and of multiple congested links. Second, the throughput of adaptive protocols like TCP is protected under the attack of non-adaptive traac (while service assurance for non-adaptive traac is trivially met). Third, the above two properties hold with mostly short-lived, Web-like traac that composes signiicant portion of today's Internet traac. We then discuss the implications of the ndings to Internet Service Providers who plan to ooer predictable bandwidth service. Also, we discuss open issues and future work for bandwidth assurance service.

A Case for Relative Di erentiated
Internet applications and users have very diverse quality-of-service expectations, making the same-service-to-all model of the current Internet inadequate and limiting. There is a widespread consensus today that the Internet architecture has to be extended with service diierentiation mechanisms, so that certain users and applications can get a better service than others at a higher cost. One ap...
متن کاملInternet network design for quality of service guarantee using Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA)
By developing the new services such as VoIP and Videoconference, using a mechanism is needed to support the quality of service of the application programs. Different models have been presented to guarantee the quality of service. Among these, the differentiated services can be mentioned which was presented by IETF. In the architecture of the differentiated services, no admission control mechani...
متن کاملA Spot Pricing Framework to Enable Pricing and Risk Management of Inter-Domain Assured Bandwidth Services
In the current bandwidth market, Internet Service Providers (ISPs) provide guaranteed Internet bandwidth within their domains. However, they are incapable of providing such assurances for data crossing their domain boundaries. In this paper, we present a spot pricing scheme for Internet bandwidth contracts within an ISP domain. These models when implemented at access or exchange points of diffe...
متن کاملA Case for Relative Diierentiated Services and the Proportional Diierentiation Model
The Internet applications and users have very diverse service expectations making the existing forwarding model, which treats all packets the same, inadequate and limiting. Consequently , there is now a widespread consensus that the Internet architecture must be extended to allow certain users and applications to get a better service than others at a higher cost. One approach, called absolute s...
